This special publication provides valuable information in the various approaches used in the industry for evaluating existing SVC installations in-service for more than 15 years. The life time of Static Var Compensators may vary from one sub-system to the other, forcing the industry to re-evaluate the life of existing SVC installations and to look at new ways to extend their life at a minimum cost compared to the cost of full replacement. A panel session held in Toronto, Canada in 2003 sponsored by Working Group I4 discussed these issues. This special publication states reasons, technical considerations, and lessons learned for refurbishment taken from these exchanges and from actual project experiences in the industry.
