System oscillation problems are not new to the electric utility industry. The earliest stability problems, which were experienced in the 1920s, were in the form of spontaneous oscillations or hunting. This was recognized as being due to insufficient damping, and was solved by the use of damper windings in the generator rotors and turbine-type prime movers with favourable torque-speed characteristics.
